As long as women have to face the rational fear of being sexually assaulted every timethey walk home past dark while men don’t, I am a feminist.

As long as misogyny exists in any country in this world, I am a feminist.

As long as women are being raped, then stoned to death or forced to marry their rapist, I am a feminist.

As long as companies promote men to manager when there are women who are equally as or better qualified, because they find that men look more authoritative, I am a feminist.

As long as women (her choice of clothes, her friendly nature, her weakness, her choice to drink alcohol) get blamed when men rape them, I am a feminist.

As long women’s opinions on online social networks are dismissed with phrases like “tits or gtfo”, “get back to the kitchen”, “are you pms’ing?”, I am a feminist.

As long as dressing like a woman is degrading for men and as long as men are insulted with phrases like “you throw like a woman”, clearly implying that being like a woman is shameful, I am a feminist.

As long as both men are women are expected to work, but taking care of children and the household are still largely considered a woman’s job, I am a feminist.

As long as boys and girls are treated differently, expected to act differently, and surrounded by different toys and colours from the day they are born, I am a feminist.

As long as topless women aren’t allowed in public unless they’re on the cover of a men’s magazine, I am a feminist.

As long as women who have sex frequently are generally told they are “sluts”, “lacking self-respect” and “lacking morals” by both men and women, while men who frequently have sex are “just being men” and it’s “natural for them”, I am a feminist.

As long as there are places where women have to pay more for health insurance than men, I am a feminist.

As long as men experience situations with equal gender representation as female-dominated, and don’t consider a group discussion equal unless there are significantly more men than women participants (as has been proven), I am a feminist.

As long as there are men who think it’s their wife or girlfriend’s duty to have sex with them whenever they want, I am a feminist.

As long as the word feminism (“the movement aimed at equal rights for women”) has a negative connotation, I am a feminist.

As long as misogynistic people exist, I am a feminist.

The issue isn’t that girls shouldn’t cook and have fun with it. It’s that we’re being told by companies, toy stores, and their marketing teams that this is the way it’s supposed to be. Girls should cook and clean (essentially playing “mom”) while boys create, destroy, and learn to save the world. Toys like LEGO, light sabers, and toy cars are all primarily marketed towards boys and these toys have far more creative possibilities and give room for more brain development.

Toy stores play a large role in continuing to support the way children of different genders play and think. From an early age girls are given little options of what they can think and become. It is no coincidence that there is a serious lack of women working in the science and math fields.

That’s why SPARK is asking you to join us in ourToy Aisle Action Projectto bring attention to the gender divide in stores! We are SPARKing this movement armed with Post-It notes and cameras in the blue and pink aisles. (Seriously, some stores have actually have colored their toy aisles pink and blue! When will it end?) With your Post-Its, make a note using slogans like “Where My Girls At?” in the blue aisle, “Your Girl Needs Joe, too” on a GI Joe, “This Is An Option For Everybody” and “What About Dads?” on the baby dolls.

Use statistics, too. Here are some we found: women make up only 13% of architects (I wonder why LEGO?), 14% of active US military (Where is G.I. Jane?), and 4% of executive chefs — so, why are all the kitchen gadgets pink when so many chefs are men?

When I was walking around town yesterday afternoon, I watched a student cross the road about 100 yards away from the lights and found myself thinking “really, you can’t just take care of yourself and cross where you’re supposed to and not put yourself in danger? If you get hit now, you’ll probably be blamed,and that makes sense.

And why?

Because we all accept that on the roads, cars have right of way over pedestrians. It is their understood right to drive right the hell on, and if you get in their way then you’ve knowingly put yourself in harm’s way.

Because we all knowingly accept that cars are all powerful on the roads.

So essentially, what you’re doing when you say “she should’ve known what she was getting herself in for when she wore that tight skirt, that’s just asking for trouble” is that men own the outside. Men are all powerful out-of-doors (and maybe inside, too, but I don’t have the strength to make that argument), so if you stumble onto their path, you’re putting yourself in danger because they have right of way.

This is what patriarchy means, in practice. This is why I can’t accept that you have any logical reasoning powers at work when you say that patriarchy is dead.

For the record, while there are some women who suffer severe mood swings as a result of their menstrual cycle and birth control, the majority of women do not undergo major personality changes every single month. It’s very frustrating to feel like you can’t express dissatisfaction or anger without being condescendingly told that you’re probably just on the rag and you don’t really mean what you’re saying. Things as minor as saying you’d rather eat Thai tonight or as justifiable as saying you don’t want to be called “sweetie” by your male co-worker can be attributed to your period.
